A strong Kiwi dollar, a longer than normal presence of Dutch Cymbidiums in North American markets, and weak sales into Japan have not made for an auspicious start to the NZ Cymbidium export season.

Flower growers from several different crops were hit by phytotoxic effects from the miticide Oberon in late 2008/early 2009, but none as were as badly effected as Cymbidium growers, who contribute 50% of the export earning for floriculture. Late spring/early summer is the traditional time for Cymbidium growers to protect their plants from two-spotted mites. Generally one to several high volume applications of miticides are applied at this period, in order to have plants free of mite pests at the start of the flower spiking period.

Many growers are reporting great difficulty in renewing their Grow Safe certificates. Both grow Safe and Approved Handler certificates have a five-year life span, after which they must be renewed. NZFGA is entering into a partnership with educhem and Total Business Training Australasia to develop a flower industry specific grow Safe/Approved Handler course. Once finalised this course will be made available to growers throughout the country. Both courses will be run simultaneously meaning that the expiry dates of both certificates can be coordinated for ease of renewal.
